The Vikings flexed their muscles going into the postseason, with two mercy victories over Adirondack on Saturday, May 2.
After being swept in two games by #2 Herkimer on Thursday, Apr. 30, the Vikings rebounded with a two-game sweep of Adirondack.
“We knew we had to win these two games to get the best seed we could going into regionals,” said Vikings pitcher Allison Ford. “We came in prepared and ready to take both.”
Ford pitched all ten innings in the doubleheader and gave up just one run through both games. The offense backed her up with twelve runs in the first game and ten in the second.
“We knew we were the better team,” said Head Coach Christopher Mazzeo. “We just had to take care of business on the field.”
In game one, the Vikings led 3-0 into the fourth inning. In the bottom half of the inning, they blew the game open with nine runs. The Vikings would shut down Adirondack in the fifth and finish the mercy at a 12-0 final.
“I think the girls started to get their timing in the fourth,” said Mazzeo. “We have prepared for faster pitching, and this year has all been slow.”
The Vikings had started to make some inroads on the pitcher in the third, scoring 3 runs, but they really hit the ball in the fourth. “We started to make adjustments hitting, and we finally broke open the game,” said Ford.
“They finally timed the pitcher and scored a few runs on them,” Mazzeo said. He also said, “We are still the number-one team in the nation hitting.”
Ford went three for four with a stolen base and two RBI hitting, and she threw a one-hitter in the circle. In the second game, she gave up four hits and one earned run pitching, but added two more hits and two more stolen bases.
In game two, the Vikings scored seven in the first couple of innings, and then added three runs in the fifth to seal the deal. The Vikings finished with a 10-2 victory over Adirondack to end the day.
“It was huge to win these games,” said Mazzeo. He said that the losses to Herkimer should not hurt the teams because of Herkimer’s ranking and the two mercy wins.
The Vikings start the regional tournament this week. Mazzeo was excited because of the wins over Adirondack. “You always want to go into the postseason on a roll,” he said.
