“Among Us” was released on June 15th, 2018 by Redwood video game development studio InnerSloth as a new IP after their mild success with “Dig to China” released in 2015. Though the game was initially released to little fanfare, attributed to what Kotaku admitted as bad marketing, the game has gained new traction during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The game is heavily based on the game “Mafia”, which is a social deduction game where you have to deduce who the mafia members are to win, while each night, the mafia men kill a person each night. “Among Us”, is structure very similar to this concept, the game is about a space crew managing and repairing while there is one “Imposter” amongst the crew.

While the crew has to carry out a certain amount of tasks to win, The Imposter’s goal is to kill all of the crew before they can complete their tasks. To do this, the Imposter can jump through vents to fast travel and sabotage different parts of the ship to either draw the crew away from their tasks or to make it easier for him to kill.

To counter this, the crew has an emergency meeting button to hit if they see anything suspicious or can report a dead body when they find it. When this happens, a chat room opens for all the members of the crew to compare notes, and at the end, choose someone who is suspicious to vote off the ship into space. If a normal crew member is voted off, then they die and the crew continues with their tasks, and if the Imposter is picked, the crew wins.

This game is incredibly fun to play and it has a very fun and non-toxic community, so it is very easy to chat with strangers. You will also almost always be able to play due to how active the game is, there are many servers open, ready to be filled with up to 10 players.

However, “Among Us” shines in its multiplayer format with friends. Two crew mates can work together to do tasks quickly, and make sure the other isn’t killed. If one person is the Imposter, the other could turn a blind eye when he kills someone and defends him in the chatroom. The more friends you have in the game the funnier the match is with up to 10 people to join and host a private room.

“Among Us” is a great game by Innersloth with its simplicity and social environment being it’s biggest strength. The game is an incredibly enjoyable game alone or with friends, and I can not wait to see what Innerslot does in the future.
