Campus Ministry Hosts Labyrinth Walk

Students walking the Labyrinth

Every month, the Campus Ministry unfolds a tarp with a labyrinth printed on it. Students, faculty, and staff are asked to enter the Labyrinth without shoes and take a minute or two to enjoy the walk through it.

Chaplain Cylon George, Campus Minister, organized the event and was present with food and refreshments. “In the Labyrinth, there are no dead ends, only one path leads to the center,” said George.

The Labyrinth is not a maze, as there is only a single path and no dead ends. Its purpose varies from person to person. One might walk in with a mind full of worries with the intention to get them all sorted out, while another may enter it after a stressful day and let rhythmic walking soothe the mind.

“There is more than one way to use the Labyrinth,” said George. “It’s your path, where some want to walk slowly and meditate a little bit, others have fun just running right through it.”

“I came out more relaxed when I went through it, like I forgot all my stress from the day because I was so focused on the labyrinth,” said Nick Brown, a student

Releasing, receiving, and returning are the three major philosophical pillars that are said to support the Labyrinth’s healing powers. According to George, when entering the labyrinth, one is encouraged to release all problems to gain relaxation.

“I felt like I was in my own little world in there,” said Quron Brace, a student. Another student said that walking the Labyrinth was a relaxing and unique experience.

“When you enter the Labyrinth, it gives your brain permission to stop,” said George. “Ninety nine percent of the students say [the same thing], that it really helps you decompress.”

The next time the labyrinth will be opened will be on Nov. 11 in CTR 204. For more information, contact c.george@hvcc.edu or visit the Campus Ministry in CTR 220.
