Campus Ministry Hosts Mindfulness Meditation Every Tuesday

Every Tuesday at noon in the Campus Ministry, students have a chance to participate in a guided meditation session lead by the Campus Chaplain, Cylon George.

“I did it before and I liked it. It’s calming and it is nice to have that feeling of unplugging,” said Krisi Cobani, Business Administration major, who came to the guided meditation last Tuesday.

For some, meditation is simply reflection, a moment of silence when the brain can be still, and for others, the act of meditating is a ritual which they practice to fine tune their relationship to the self and a higher power.
“I wanted something relaxing. I have a lot of stuff going on with school and problems at home. I really needed to clear my mind and relax,” said Amanda Medeiros, a freshman Criminal Justice major.

There are additional reasons to consider meditation. In a recent study that took place over the course of a year, meditation was linked to higher test scores and reduced psychological distress (Charles et al.) However, that is far from the only advantage. Meditating helps reduce stress which can help you keep focus through work and school.
Regardless of how you choose to participate, those interested in taking a moment out of their busy days to experience some inner peace should check out the meditation sessions.

Students from all faiths, backgrounds, and degree programs are welcome in the Campus Ministry, an interfaith prayer room. It is open from 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. Monday and 8 a.m. to noon Tuesday through Thursday.
Starting in September there will be a monthly labyrinth that students can walk through. A labyrinth is a maze that if followed will lead you to the center. The labyrinth will be housed in The Exhibition Room of the Siek Campus Center in Room 204 from 9 a.m. to noon on the following dates: 9/15, 10/15,11/19, 12/10. For more information please contact Cylon George at 518-629-7168 or at c.george@hvcc.edu.
