“Capital City Lights in the Park” has been offering the people of the Albany area a fun attraction that evokes the Christmas spirit for 22 years now.

The 22nd “Capital City Lights in the Park” kicked off Nov. 23 at Washington Park and offered those in the capital region a beautiful and festive light show. The event was funded by Market 32 by Price Chopper.

It goes from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m., except on Friday and Saturday where it stays open until 10 p.m.  It costs $20 for a regular sized car, and $25-$50 for large vans depending on the number of people.

Every year they offer the same lights but with additional surprises.

There were many events that occurred for the Christmas season in the capital region, such as Troy’s Victorian Stroll and Chowder Fest in Saratoga Springs. These events, however, are only one day events, while the “Capital City Lights in the Park” lasts for over a month.

They also offered a day that is similar to Chowder Fest and horse and buggy rentals. The event also held occasional wine tastings.

At the end of the light show there was an indoor area with desserts and multiple vendors offered an assortment of merchandise and more.

The event is enjoyable for children but even more so because on select days Santa and his elves will be present.

The event even offered something for your pets! There were “Pet Walk Nights” where the drivable tour was closed for the night and you and your four-legged friends could tour the lights on foot.

Admission is $5 a person or $10 for a family and benefits the charities picked for 2018. All proceeds benefit the juvenile crime prevention programs of the Albany Police Athletic League.

There are also “Bike Nights” in which you can bike the park and view the light show. These nights cost the same as “Pet Walk Nights.”

“Capital City Lights in the Park” gives giveaways and prizes to children as well, adding to the family friendly experience.

For those who aren’t fond of the cold or leaving their homes, the “Capital City Lights in the Park” has a website that offers a virtual tour. This virtual tour is free of charge.

The event has also reached a huge goal: there’ve been over one million visitors to the light show since it first started 22 years ago.

The light show is opened until Jan. 2. This is a great opportunity to see one of Albany’s most popular and beloved holiday attractions. It’s an even better way to get into the Christmas spirit all from the comfort and warmth of your car.
