Choir Club Still Performs During COVID-19

Believe it or not, people sing in a choir. So, when the news got out that a club that’s all about singing was taking place during a time where COVID regulations are supposed to be set in place, many questions of how came up.

Advisor MaryAnn Gulyas states that even with new protocols the club is pushing forward while having a positive attitude. “We do the best we can but singing with a mask on is rather difficult. We will comply with all COVID requirements until notified by the college of changes to the protocols. We still enjoy singing together and having fun!”

Even though masks are a way of staying safe during these hard times, they cause many defaults in everyday life. Singing is an example of that and as The Script once said, “Take that rage, put it on a page, take the page to the stage, blow the roof off the place.” Singing doesn’t have a list of right or wrong ways to perform it, so if you have a desire to sing-then masks won’t hold you back.

This club is one of many that have lost some abilities that they may have had before COVID restrictions were set in place but, luckily HVCC has an area where they can perform. “The choir meets in the auditorium which is a large enough space for social distancing. Each member has their own music folder,” said MaryAnn.

There are multiple genres of music and about a billion different songs have been made, so you may be wondering, what choices have the club made to perform? Examples are “… the HVCC Alma Mater, the National Anthem, ‘Corner of the Sky’ from Pippin and ‘For Good’ from Wicked,” MaryAnn said while also noting that the library had various books about music to choose from as well.

For most music students, events are a common interest. Since the start of the 2021 fall semester, transportation for events hasn’t been a possibility but, Choir Club still has some options.

“The choir sings a commencement and occasionally at Student Honors and Faculty Honors. We also sing at the Memorial Service in May. We hope to sing Christmas Carols around campus during the last week of the Fall semester,” MaryAnn proudly explained.

Currently, the club only has about ten students participating and but, welcome anyone else to join. If you would like to learn more about or join the club, you may email MaryAnn at m.gulyas@hvcc.edu. The club meets every Monday from two to three in the Auditorium located in Bulmer Telecommunications Center.
