Emotions in fives

Smiles

Everything new,

Starts with a smile.

One corner all the way to the other,

Laughter all the while.

Grin

It’s not as new as it once was,

But still brings joy.

One,

Two,

Three beers within an hour.

Frown

He says he can stop anytime,

But she says he doesn’t.

“He’s not as bad as you think.”

She tells you when she tucks you in.

Pout

He yells.

Then doesn’t.

He’s just stressed with work.

Everyday.

Tears

He yells,

But continues.

Calls mom terrible things.

According to him she is cheating,

But she just hangs out with friends.

Accusing me of touching the thermostat,

And kicks me out of the house.

Tells both of us we’ll amount to nothing,

And we can’t do better than him.

“He’s not as bad as you think.”

Seven years past

After years and years of saying,

“He’s exactly as bad as I think.”

She caves.

One week before Christmas.

Everything out of the door.

Smiles

Everything new,

Starts with a smile.

One corner all the way to the other,

Laughter all the while.
