Faculty leave college positions for uncertain reasons

Rumors on campus circulate regarding two professors who are no longer employed and one who has been demoted.

Phil White, Dean of the School of Business, Engineering and Industrial Technologies, according to some faculty on campus was fired, however Executive Director of Communication and Marketing, Dennis Kennedy, and others who wish to remain anonymous, said that White retired earlier than planned, resulting in more confusion surrounding his leave.

“Phil White retired from the college following many years of service, most recently serving as Dean of the School of Business and Engineering and Industrial Technologies,” Dennis Kennedy, Executive Director of Communications and Marketing, said. “He began his career at the college in 1991.”

The Hudsonian reached out to White for comment but have not received a response.

Tony Kossmann, previously the Automotive, Manufacturing and Electrical Engineering Technologies Department Chairperson, was demoted to a professor in the same department.

“Tony Kossmann is a full professor at Hudson Valley, however, he is no longer serving as a department chair.

The Hudsonian was unable to get a response from administration as to why.

“Thank you for the inquiry but I am not interested,” Kossmann said.

The departure of American Sign Language professor, Jean Armstrong, also has not been clarified.

“It was my pleasure to work at Hudson Valley Community College,” said Armstrong. “I loved the students and the community created around the interest in learning American Sign Language.”  

“Jean Armstrong is not currently teaching at the college,” Kennedy stated.

Her absence was abrupt, leaving many students wondering whether she will return in the fall.

“I can not discuss information regarding former employees,” said Maria Palmara, Chairperson of English, Foreign language, and ESL.
