As the leaves change and the temperature drops, Hudson Valley Community College students are left with one burning question, “What do I wear this fall?”.

We, as New Yorkers, are at a very pivotal part of our weather cycle. The sweet spot between boiling hot and frozen tundra. This is the kind of weather where we can comfortably wear cute layers and heavy sweaters, so let’s not waste it!

This fall, I recommend going bold or not going at all. Try throwing in small, yet bold pops of colors into your outfit. This can be done with tights, leggings, jewelry or even shirts tucked away under cardigans or flannels.  For fall, I’m a fan of dark teal, burnt orange and darker, cooler shades of yellow. Fall is about color. Look around at all the oranges, yellows and deep greens. It’s all very bold! If a tree can look cool and try out new colors, why can’t you?

I implore you to also try try colored jeans this fall. So often people think the extent of jean color is just dark wash or light wash. Next time you’re out shopping, and see a pair of maroon jeans calling to you, pick ‘em up!

Speaking of color, for outfit inspiration this fall, look no further than a simple color wheel on Google Images. Try pairing colors that are opposite of one another. I find that colors like burnt orange, and teal pair nice. Same with deep plums, and dusty yellows. Consulting a color wheel is a good idea for any outfit, any time of year. This fall, and the rest of the year, try pairing colors that you wouldn’t normally.

Boldness shouldn’t stop at colors! If you’re extra adventurous, try on some patterned leggings, or a weird sweater that makes you look kind of like grandma (you know the one). For patterns, I think plaids and stripes are fun and can spice up an otherwise boring look, but don’t be afraid to experiment with what other patterns you might find!

When it comes to fall fashion, I have one word for you. Layers. It adds a lot of depth and can even change the whole look! Not only that, but layers keep you super warm too! A chunky sweater under a denim jacket is perfect for a chilly night out.

For cold mornings when you can’t be bothered to look nice and just want to wear a hoodie, throw a flannel over it! It can make you look way more put together than you may feel. It also looks more planned.  A fun shirt under an oversized cardigan (maybe a flannel if you’re feeling extra fall) is another comfy outfit that will keep you warm and good looking.

This fall, really try to go out of your comfort zone and try new things. You might find something you really love! Life is too short to worry about what others will think!
