Fall Transfer Fair to be held Oct. 1

As of Sept. 22, nearly 100 colleges had registered to participate in Hudson Valley’s 2014 Fall Transfer Fair, to be held on Wednesday, Oct. 1, in the Siek Campus Center, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

According to Larry Ellis, associate director of student development for the Center for Counseling and Transfer, this is the highest school turnout so far in the Transfer Fair’s existence of over 15 years. He said that over time, participation at the Transfer Fair has been steadily increasing.

“The transfer population has increased,” Ellis said, and they come to Hudson Valley because “they’re looking for quality students.”

He was particularly pleased at the geographic variety of the schools participating in this fair. “We always have out-of-state schools, but now I think we have some coming from Florida.”

The list of participating schools includes the Florida Institute of Technology and Jacksonville University. Other distant states are also represented: Grand Canyon University (in Arizona), Trident University (in California), and the University of North Carolina at Wilmington are participating.

Closer to home, Capital District colleges and universities are well represented. Excelsior College, RPI, The Sage Colleges, The College of Saint Rose, Siena College, and SUNY Albany are all attending. 20 SUNY colleges are attending, as well as colleges and universities elsewhere in New York, Vermont, Massachusetts, and Connecticut.

Ellis said that the Center for Counseling and Transfer had advertised the fair through many channels. “We have signs, as you can see, throughout the building; we advertised in the Chronicle, through student emails, on the television screens throughout the campus,” and, he noted, “we advertised in the Hudsonian.”

Ellis urged all students to attend: “If you know the school you’re going to or you don’t know the school you’re going to, I strongly encourage you to get an experience, to know what it’s like – please, just attend the transfer fair.”

Hudson Valley holds a Spring Transfer Fair as well, but Ellis said that it “tends to be smaller.” He said that individual schools also visit the campus throughout the semester, setting up tables inside the Center for Counseling to speak with students about transferring.
