Global Foundries Recruiter Coming to Campus

Global Foundries will be holding an informational meeting at 8 a.m. on Oct. 2 in the Maureen Stapleton Theatre. A recruiter will be speaking about Global Foundries employment opportunities, the application process, and the assessment process for becoming an employee.

There are Global Foundries manufacturing centers in Germany, Singapore, and New York. The center in New York is located in Malta. Also known as the Fab 8, this facility manufactures and processes chips onto silicon wafers.

Fab 8 is coming to Hudson Valley specifically recruit students for their employment opportunities. Depending on the position a student is interested in, there are different degree requirements. They hire people ranging from high school graduates to doctoral fellows. Starting salaries at Fab 8 range from $15-18 an hour.

In Fab 8, there is a 300,000 square feet expanse of cleanroom space, where special clothing, referred to as a “Bunny Suit.” A cleanroom is an environment in manufacturing that is very controlled with very low levels of pollution, such as dust or vapors from chemicals, to prevent contamination. This is why the cleanroom requires separate attire and is protected from everyday objects.

Human hands are never allowed to touch any of the wafers being processed. The production is similar to that of an assembly line, but is more advanced. Special equipment is used in these factories and it is very limited. A track system is used to move a wafer from one part of the factory to another without any interruption or disturbance.

The informational meeting is not a public event and is only open to students of HVCC. Students with engineering, science, and technical backgrounds are encouraged to attend.
