As students dive into the spring semester, many struggle with getting back into the groove of things, but there are tips to get back into the routine.

After a month-long break, many students must adjust to school again which may require more focus for some students than others. Sleep, eating habits, work schedule and various aspects of students lives need to be rewired in order to be successful in the upcoming semester.

Students take different steps, both on and off campus, in order to get back into a routine for school.

Garo Minassian, engineering science student, used resources on campus to get out of the “break” mindset.

“I go to the [Leaning Assistant Center (LAC)] for help and even come in on Saturdays, but above all else, I try to stay on top of everything,” he said.

Nick Timpanaro, individual studies major, shared the same view on how helpful the LAC can be.

“It helps me just get back into the groove of the college feel,” Timpanaro said. “The LAC keeps me focusing on my school work and the people there motivate me.”

Getting help early in the semester and taking advantage of Hudson Valley Community College’s resources is one way to ensure you don’t fall behind. But, it is also important to manage your lifestyle too.

Pierce Doud, an engineering science student, and Maggie Helenek, a liberal arts major, both try their best to manage aspects of their lives other than just school.

“I keep an agenda of everything that I have going on, and always try to get to bed as early as possible so I can wake up refreshed the next day,” Helenek said.

Doud uses a few different strategies. “I have been getting back into the routine of school by meeting new people in classes and creating study groups to work with,” he said. “I am also managing my time to ensure that I have a good balance between life and work.”

While managing schoolwork is important, it is just as important to continue maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Coming back to school can consume a students focus while taking away attention from other areas of life.

Joe Luger, individual studies major, emphasized his sleeping pattern.

“It is the most important thing because if I don’t get it, I won’t do good,” he said. “So getting sleep is a priority.”

Sometimes all that can be done is to learn while the semester continues.

“I just try to get through the pain,” Jordan Rodriguez, a liberal arts student said. “The first couple of weeks are very tiring, so I just try my best.”

Every student reacts differently to the switch from winter break to the spring semester. Everyone has different ways of getting back into a routine. No matter what helps you best, keep in mind that it is a new semester and a new opportunity to put your best foot forward.
