I’m excited to announce that the Hudsonian placed third in the nation for the “Best Newspaper: two-year school” for the Apple Awards at the 2019 College Media Association competition.

This is the Hudsonian’s second time achieving this honor in its history.

After two weeks of reporting on events, perfecting comics, editing photos, polling the campus and designing a new seal, the Hudsonian squad, or squHud as we call it, received praise from many staff and faculty members on campus.

President Ramsammy shared his thoughts to the Hudsonian in a statement:

“The Hudsonian should be extremely proud of its third place showing in the 2019 College Media Association David L. Adams Apple Awards. I congratulate Editor-in-Chief Jaimie Albright and his dedicated team for all their hard work. I also share my appreciation with Professor Rachel Bornn for her leadership and advisement of the Hudsonian staff over many years. It’s a team effort, and third place in this national competition is something the whole campus can be proud of. I salute our student journalists for this fantastic achievement.”

We appreciate this recognition and will continue to serve as a platform for the students, faculty and staff of Hudson Valley Community College.

Hudsonian adviser, Professor Rachel Bornn also conveyed how proud she is of the editorial board and staff:

“It’s remarkable how the news staff is able to provide well written, timely news to our campus every week. That is very rare at a community college. Cleary the staff this semester is doing the best work ever for the Hudsonian. I’m very proud of their efforts. They represent [Hudson Valley Community College] and student journalists exceptionally well.”

Asan Anarkulov, staff photographer, shared what it’s like to be on the Hudsonian team.

“When a group of like-minded individuals come together with a common objective and have a sense of leadership, tremendous things happen,” Anarkulov said. “That is exactly why the Hudsonian placed top three best college newspapers in the nation.”

We travelled to Manhattan on Wednesday, March 6 via Amtrak and spent the train ride critiquing our competition issue.

Some members of the editorial board had the opportunity to tour different news stations on Friday morning.

Angela Scipione, the news editor for the Hud., had the opportunity to tour Fox News.

“It was a cool experience,” Scipione said. “I got to see a lot of behind-the-scenes stuff like control rooms and editing rooms. My tour group even got to watch part of a live taping with Dana Perino.”

Managing editor, Kevin Waltz, was selected to tour Yahoo! Finance.

“I really enjoyed my tour,” Waltz said. “I not only got to see Yahoo! Finance, but I also got to tour The Huffington Post and Tumblr.”

Copy editor, Hailey McLaughlin, and staff writer, Omsalama Ayoub, won the ‘Are You Ready to Rumble: AP Style’ competition, by 300 points. The Rumble was a Family Feud style game,  challenging student’s knowledge on Associated Press style writing.

“Although we all work on a team in the newsroom, it was a lot of fun playing competitively against a 4-year school and showing that a community college is just as knowledgeable,” said McLaughlin. “I loved working with not only Saloma, but Betsy, Jake and Griffin to win.”

The Hudsonian members enjoyed an early family-style Italian dinner on Friday evening at Tony’s Di Napoli. The squHud would like to thank Rosemary Armeo for her generous donation to cover our fantastic dinner!

After attending Lee Hall’s ‘Network’ at the Belasco Theatre on W 44th St, the squHud loitered under the marquee to snap photos of the show’s lead actor, Bryan Cranston.

Aside from placing third nationally, meeting Bryan Cranston was the epic experience of the trip.

He was very gracious, allowing us to take photographs with him and sign our playbills.

“One of the central themes of the show was to be a smarter audience,” Asan Anarkulov said.

“Whether your main source of information is television, social media, books or newspapers, always do your research and fact-check what you learn. It is incredibly easy to be manipulated by media, especially today. Other than the superb acting and production, Network was a grand reminder to be a more careful audience.”

Comradery is an important part of the Hudsonian, preparing us for competitions that take place in the fall and spring. There is a special fraternal foundation that unites our squHud, like a tight-knit family.

The Hudsonian’s layout editor, Jake Freehart

“My time in NYC was amazing because it showed how big the world is and how many other people are working towards goals too. It’s reminded me to work hard in everything I do.”

Creative Editor, Betsy Stenard, remembers New York as a unique experience.

“The weekend was great bonding time for our whole crew,” she said. “Being together while winning third place made it even better because we shared in all our hard work and got to see it pay off.”

I want to shout out Nicole Hayden, Program Assistant in Student Activities and Vincent Giordano, campus photographer, who are always a great help to the Hudsonian, and some of the organization’s biggest supporters.

I’d also like to thank our web editor, Nicole Scipione, who didn’t join us on the trip, for organizing the distribution of our competition issue on campus.

The Hudsonian editorial board and staff should know I am incredibly proud of our achievements this year. Overseeing the growth of each member has been a fantastic experience and I am dedicated to

The Hudsonian last achieved third place honor for the Apple Awards in New York City March 2015.
