Hudson Valley Community College has announced they will expand their contract with GlobalFoundries to add a new building in Malta, New York. The plan is set to cost $12.5 million. The building is intended to host apprenticeship programs to give students more training in essential workplace jobs.

The local company GlobalFoundries, based within Malta, has worked with Hudson Valley Community College in the past, and according to the Time Union, could soon be valued at $25 billion.  The announcement came during an event hosted by the company on Thursday, August 5.

The new building referred to as the GlobalFoundaries Workplace and Apprenticeship Center at HVCC will be funded thanks to a $500,000 grant. “Hudson Valley Community College is thrilled to partner with GlobalFoundries to create a new Workforce Training and Apprenticeship Center as part of our HVCC North expansion project,” Hudson Valley Community College President Roger Ramsammy said in an official statement on the HVCC website.

“GlobalFoundries has long been a valued partner to the college, and we very much appreciate their support in kicking off our HVCC North fundraising with this generous donation. Hudson Valley recognizes the significant economic growth that GlobalFoundries continues to create in our region, and as an institution committed to training the Capital Region’s workforce of tomorrow, the college is pleased to continue to grow and strengthen our partnership with such a prominent workforce development leader,” Ramsammy continued.

According to the website, programs at HVCCNorth will focus mostly on healthcare-related fields and giving students in those areas the skills to succeed. The website sites a lack of workers entering into these respected fields, as businesses throughout America struggle to staff up as more venues open thanks to growing vaccinations in the United States.

HVCCNorth hopes to combat that, by equipping students interested in those fields with exactly the skills they need to succeed in the fields. HVCC hopes the program will also keep jobs within the Capital Region area “providing a significant economic boost for the Capital Region.”

“GlobalFoundries’ $500,000 donation continues a long history of collaboration between Hudson Valley Community College and GF. It is critical to the industry to have a partner in education that keeps pace with the rapidly evolving semiconductor industry,” Peter Benyon, GlobalFoundaries’ General Manager said in an officially released statement.

“There is real value in the proximity of HVCC North to GlobalFoundries, and through our continuing partnership, we envision opening our doors to each other for the benefit of Hudson Valley, GF and the entire Capital Region. We hope GF’s corporate contribution will inspire other regional businesses and community organizations interested and vested in the future of the Capital Region to come on board and support this important capital project that will expand opportunities in STEM and skilled trades and will provide benefits and long-term success for us all,” Benyon continued.

Other facilities on the planned Malta campus will include a STEM learning center that will span 14,500 feet, a technology center and centers for science classes such as chemistry and biology.
