HVCC Art Department Launches Final Virtual Gallery titled “Home Alone 3: On Pause.”

By Lomie Blum, News Editor

On February 9th HVCC’s art department launched its final virtual installation of the “Home Alone” series. This final gallery exhibition is titled “Home Alone 3: On Pause” and features the work of Matt Frieburghas, Mandy Cano Villalobos, Janaye Brown, and Megan Suttles.

Tara Fracalossi, the director of Teaching Gallery, in the introduction before the show, discusses the art, the show’s theme of time, and COVID-19.

“the work in Home Alone 3 – On Pause examines the passing of time – its compression, its expansion, its seemingly endless repetition as we wait and wait and wait for this damn pandemic to be controlled. As we dream of the day when we can return to “normal” life (whatever that may be), we figure out incrementally how to get by…the artists presented here grapple with universal experiences of boredom, loneliness, claustrophobia, patience, and, through the sheer persistence of making work, hope,” Fracalossi said.

“Home Alone 3: On Pause” only features videos and photography, unlike past exhibitions which featured the art of several mediums. These videos and photos contain striking imagery that conveys the passing of time.

One of the featured artists, Mandy Cano Villalobos, states on her video depicting her paint on a floor with a toothbrush.

“My work addresses how we experience time, our understanding of chronological progression, collective and personal memory, and the atemporal nature of ritual…” Villalobos says.

This exhibition also features upcoming artist discussions via Zoom.

A talk with Matt Frieburghaus will be held Wednesday, March 3 at 2 p.m, Mandy Cano Villalobos will be speaking Thursday, March 18 at 10:30 a.m., and Megan Suttles on Thursday, April 8 at 2:30 p.m.

The virtual exhibition is open through April 16 and artist talks are free for students and both are accessible through the Teaching  Gallery Page on HVCC’s website.
