Lady Vikings Win at home against Adirondack

The Hudson Valley Women’s Basketball team (8-16) won at home last Tuesday defeating Adirondack Community College (1-20) 59-45.

The Lady Vikings played tough throughout the game and managed to defeat the Adirondack Community College for the second time this year.

“We worked well as a team, no one was selfish,” Sophomore Kristene Longendyke (Kingston, Kingston HS), said.

The Lady Vikings once again had three players who scored in double figures. The first points of the night for Hudson Valley came from Longendyke on the foul line. She went 1 of 2 her first time and got the ball rolling in the Viking’s direction.

Leading the way was Sophomore Colleen Horan (Rotterdam, Mohonasen HS) with 23 points, 17 rebounds, seven steals, and five assists. Horan had 16 of her points in the first half. Adding to the score for Hudson Valley were Freshman Emily Vasquez (Schuylerville, Schuylerville HS) with 13 points and 20 rebounds and Freshman Kelley Barnes (Rotterdam, Mohonasen HS) had 10 points and 15 rebounds.

Despite Adirondack’s early 7-1 lead, Hudson Valley went ahead at 15:23 in the first half after an 8-1 run making the score 9-8. The Lady Vikings were persistent on offense and defense, by creating steals and grabbing offensive rebounds that led to points in their favor.

“We played together, we weren’t greedy,” Freshman Natasha Sanchez said. The Lady Vikings were determined, giving them a 32-22 lead by the end of the first half. Kelley Barnes started the second half with a two-pointer. Five minutes later, Adirondack Head Coach Aaron Nooney, called a timeout to try to stop the Hudson Valley onslaught. When the ball came back into play, the Lady Vikings were up 41-27.

With 10 minutes left in the game, HVCC was ahead 49-29. Adirondack could not stop Hudson Valley from scoring before the time ran out.

“A win is a win.” Hudson Valley Head Coach Colleen Ferris said. Her team won 59-45 over Adirondack Community College.
