Podcasts are a fun way to hear fictional stories, important news, and true crime tales, along with so much more. With so many to choose from, what podcasts are Hudson Valley students listening to?

Podcasts can be anything you want, and that’s part of what makes them popular.  You can use apps like RadioPublic, Castbox, and Podbean. It is easy to just plug in your headphones and pick out of a wide variety of podcasts with topics on seemingly almost everything. Want something to entertain you while at the gym or on the bus?

Depending on where your interests lie, a podcast like StarTalk, which is hosted by Neil Degrasse Tyson, and discusses space, science and pop culture, might be a great listening experience.  If that’s not up your alley, there’s also podcasts like Lore that explore the mysterious true stories of the supernatural and just plain unnatural, or fictional podcasts like Limetown that immerse you in incredible auditory adventures.

What about if you are looking to relax after a long day of school?  Sit back and let yourself fall into the world of Welcome to Night Vale, where wacky deaths, disappearances, and forbidden dog parks are the norm.  Or are you more interested in hearing some fun and funny facts from some hilarious narrators? Stuff You Should Know and No Such Thing As A Fish have got you covered.

If you want to learn more outside of class, Revisionist History, This American Life, and How Did This Get Made? are all fascinating options.  Even a podcast about music and breaking down all of its parts exists: Song Exploder.

Human Services student Spencer Ford love true crime podcasts. Some popular and darkly intriguing true crime podcast options are Serial and My Favorite Murder, although there are many, many more.

Brianna Isby, biotechnology major, said “freakonomics is pretty good.” It talks about a wide variety of topics from the economics of sleep to how to become great at just about anything. Isby also said she would recommend podcasts on real world events.

Individual studies student Danielle Gerber was quick and enthusiastic to recommend the short but sweet Queen Radio, a podcast hosted by Nicki Minaj that is unfortunately only available on Apple Music’s Beats 1 station.

Everyone likes something different, but the wonderful thing about the world of podcasts is that there is something out there for everyone.  No matter if you are into pop culture, which has such podcasts as Still Processing and The Read, or food, where Gastropod and The Splendid Table spring into action, you’ll find a niche that will excite you.

Many podcasts have advice for students on both the emotional and academic parts of college. College Life Podcast and College Info Geek are great ones to start with.

In the rare case you can’t find something you want to listen to, there is always the option of creating one yourself.  Gerber and Tucker think it would be interesting if Hudson Valley Community College had its own advice podcast about the challenges and experiences of college students here, and how to cope with life in college.  Who knows, maybe they will host the next podcast you listen to.
