Sam Smith’s New Album “Love Goes” Captures Heartbreak

By Kevin Conley II, Staff Writer

“Love Goes” is British pop artist Sam Smith’s newest album, which was released on October 30th, 2020. Sam Smith is mostly known for singing beautiful soul songs like his popular song, “I Know I’m Not The Only One,” and his hit single from the 007 film Spectre called “Writings on the Wall.” “Love Goes” further investigates this artist’s freedom to express himself as a person and inspire others to be whoever they want to be, as well as battling the challenges of a relationship, finding love, and moving on from the end of a relationship.

Each song relates to how love has affected him and how he misses feeling love. The album includes hit singles like “Diamonds,” and the album has bonus tracks, known for hits like “Dancing with a Stranger,” “How Do You Sleep,” “To Die For, I’m Ready,” and the original song from the Netflix miniseries, Watership Down, called “Fire on Fire.”

Every song also has a different style than his songs on previous albums. Other than some inspiring, emotional songs to feel for, he creates his songs in a techno-pop style, making them more upbeat than the songs he sang in the past. Each song in the album shows the artist expressing “his inner woman,” according to a featurette from his song “How Do You Sleep.”

While his previous songs had the purpose to reach out to fans by connecting to the feeling of losing someone in a relationship, or uplift someone with songs like “Stay with Me.”

Love Goes is about helping fans escape the world that’s trapping how they want to truly become and be the person they are meant to be. Each song has its own meaning, like “Fire on Fire,” it tells how someone would feel after meeting someone who recently that person broke up with, and still have the same feelings from before.

Also, “Dancing with a Stranger” talks about how people have the freedom to love whoever you want according to their sexuality and welcome anyone who is willing to find it. The song uplifts fans by moving on from a breakup and finding someone else to be alone with.

“Diamonds” has a different meaning, different from the other songs, instead discussing how it feels to have someone break a person’s heart. “Diamonds” talks about how greed could ruin a relationship by having value over gold, diamonds, or money over being with the person he/she loves.

It even shows that love is worth the riches that people consumed by greed want more than love: either love or greed.

Like most of Sam Smith’s songs, he uplifts people and makes them feel for him at the same time. Smith does this by expressing his freedom of expressing his “inner woman” and when love brings someone down, go out and find another person.

Smith encourages his listeners to use the ability to love whoever a person wants to love. The album describes the meaning of love, what it can do to hurt or make things better, and the expression of being the person you want to be.
