Student Christian Association opens the door to friends and faith

All walks of life, from any religion or none at all, are welcome at the Student Christian Association.

For the community, the club is a faithful, wise and understanding group whose members are open to what people have to say about their lives and the world as well as whatever problems may be involved in both.

James LaBate, an advisor of Student Christian Association, has been with the club for about 15 years and this is his first year as the Head Advisor.

“The most important thing is that it is a time of fellowship for believers, to meet one another and study the bible together,” LaBate said.

Student Christian Association is a good way to meet new people who are kind and generous, as well as share your thoughts with a group of Christians from different denominations.

“I joined because I am a Christian and I wanted to explore what others had to say about being Christians,” said Peter Sanchez, an accounting major.

According to the club’s website, the goal of Student Christian Association is to “strengthen and encourage one another as Christians and to share their faith and love with others on campus.”

The Student Christian Association meetings usually start out with icebreakers and greeting everyone, followed by announcements.

“People announce events happening in their parish to let others know if they want to get involved,” LaBate said.

Occasionally members use Christian music, praise and worship during the meetings.

In the past, the club would use music on “YouTube,” however, LaBate said that they have been graced by visits from musicians for this entire semester and every meeting people come in to play music.

Students in the club say that they feel genuinely more relieved and happy when attending the meetings.

“School tends to take over my focus, and going to [Student Christian Association] tends to erase some of that stress from my mind,” said Hunter Lipina, a digital media major.

Whether you want to have new joy enter your life, or you feel out of it and don’t know what to do or where to go, the Student Christian Association may be the club for you.

The club meets every Monday at 2 p.m. in  Brahan 107.
