Dean Plakas might look like an ordinary 19-year-old college student but, he has a lot of responsibility.

This is Plakas’ second year at Hudson Valley, majoring in business adminstration. His name might sound familiar because he’s the President of the Student Senate and member of the Faculty Student Association’s Board of Directors. Before he became president he was a senator. “I felt being president of the Student Senate was the next step,” he said.

After  he graduates from Hudson Valley from Hudson Valley, Plakas is considering transferring to Ithaca College. He is also considering attending law school or pursuing politics one day.

He hasn’t always been interested in politics though. At Niskayuna High School he didn’t take part in student government at all.

Plakas comes from a large family with six brothers and a sister. “There is a very big age gap between us but we mostly get along,” he said.

Outside college, Plakas works at a local pizzeria with his father where he enjoys making pizza. He also goes to the gym, plays raquetball and wrestles with his brothers.

One of the most memorable moments being Student Senate President was going to the Leadership Conference in New Orleans with others on the senate.  “I learned so much and was in good company with others on the senate,” he said.

For other future Student Senate President hopefuls, he advises “Listen to the advice of Louis, Janet and Sue.”
