Student Senate Leaders Hope to Increase School Spirit
“We want students to get more involved and have a lot of fun at HVCC,” said Myasia Colon, Student Senate Vice President.
The Student Senate is responsible for managing the student activities budget. Each full time student at Hudson Valley pays a $128 records and activities fee and part time students pay 10.30$ per credit hour.
A total of $802,562 makes up the student activities budget. Club funding, events on campus, discounted movie tickets, and free CDTA ridership all come from this fund.
Fanny Motey, Student Senate Treasurer, believes getting involved is important so that a student benefits from their activity fee. “Every student should take advantage of clubs.”
Grace Harrison, Student Senate President and Student Trustee, said a main goal is to “engage students through fun events.” She added, “We want to have the feel of a four year college.”
To promote that feel of school spirit, the Senate leadership has included a homecoming week in the event calendar. The week will be capped by the homecoming football game and homecoming dance on Saturday, Sep. 27th.
Some of the major events this semester will be Fall Fest, a talent show, a poetry slam, day trips to New York City and Boston, and Pumpkin Palooza. The full events calendar is available at the student activities office, on http://www.hvcc.edu, and posted around campus.
On Thursday, Aug. 28, the Welcome Back Barbeque will mark the first big event of the year. There will be free food, entertainment, and games.
The Student Senate leadership is made up of President Grace Harrison, Vice President Myasia Colon, Treasurer Fanny Motey, and Secretary Samantha Bedell. Freshman elections will be held on Oct. 29-30. Senior senators are appointed.
The Senate meets every monday at 2 PM. All students are welcome to attend.
Harrison wants to improve communication with the student body in order to best represent them in her position. “I want to get other student’s opinions.”
