If students weren’t already excited for their long-awaited break for Thanksgiving, the college hosted a free Thanksgiving buffet-style lunch on Monday, Nov. 19 that added to the holiday hype.

Hudson Valley Community College’s most recent effort to making our community college more of a community was to take advantage of the holiday season and offer a free Thanksgiving lunch to kick off the break.

The college set up Thanksgiving favorites such as turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing and pumpkin pie. The event was held in the Siek Campus Center and featured live music. From 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. flocks of students and staff joined the festivities.

“A number of different groups from the college helped make the event possible,” the Director of Communications for Hudson Valley Community College, Dennis Kennedy, said. “The president’s office, the student senate, the cultural affairs program provided the musical acts and Mazzone donated pies,” Kennedy said. “We just ask for people to bring non-perishable foods to contribute to our college food pantry,” he said. “We’ve received considerable amounts of donations.”

The Student Activities Office also donated movie tickets and the bookstore donated prizes in order to attract more students.

Multiple students described what they were grateful for this year.

“I’m thankful for the life I have, the food that’s provided at this event and my favorite thing about Thanksgiving is definitely the food!” Domingo Garcia, liberal arts student, said.

“I’m thankful for my family and my favorite thing about Thanksgiving is being able to sit down with my loved ones and spending time together,” Thomas Mason, business administration, said.

“I am thankful for the food offered for free here and my family,” Spencer Van Epps, environmental science major, said. “I’m also thankful that I’m getting an education here, I really like this school,” he said. “My favorite thing about Thanksgiving is seeing my relatives from China and family out of state because I don’t see them often.”

“I’m thankful for my family life,” Daniel Conway, digital media major, said. “I’m thankful for my grandmother and my upbringing and I’m even more thankful that my father has recently kicked his alcohol addiction.”

The Thanksgiving lunch also had a pie eating contest. “The pie eating contest was a great way for students to have fun and let loose and I won the contest and got free movie tickets,” the winner of the contest, Elijah Hummel, individual studies major, said.
