Unique Sound art exhibit in teaching gallery until December
Hudson Valley is currently housing the “Field Elevations: Works by Ed Osborn” exhibit until Saturday, Dec. 7 in the teaching gallery on the first floor of the administration building.
Osborn was born in Helsinki, Finland and studied music composition at WesleyanUniversity. Osborn is known for works of art that incorporate sound.
Students can visit the exhibit and experience the pieces for free on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 4 p.m., 1:00 p.m to 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday and from noon until 4:00 p.m on Saturdays.
“I think it’s a great way to see artists that are in the area and to merge yourself into some of the art,” said Hannah Naples, a student who volunteers in the art gallery.
“We don’t have a lot of that going around [in the area], so it’s really nice that Hudson Valley has such a nice gallery that students can access,” said Naples.
“[My favorite is] the piece in the dark room upstairs,” said student Hayley Macherome.
“Out of the [whole exhibit], I really like our top floor video piece,” said Naples.
The ambiguity and atmosphere created by the projector seemed to be what attracted the students.
“It really makes you think about what it is because it is not set, it is making you think, the artist does not tell you,” said Naples.
The school finds and sets up exhibits by asking local artists if they are interested in displaying their work at Hudson Valley.
“Our gallery teacher gets in contact with artists and asks them if they want to show [their work],” said Naples.
Hudson Valley usually opens about four exhibits on each year, three of which feature local artists while the other one is a compilation of the work of a student artist. Each one typically runs for about a month, which is kicked off by an artist discussion the day that the gallery opens to the public.
