After an impressive season, the men’s Basketball season came to an end. All seniors were recognized and awarded at senior night on Monday, Feb. 18.

In their final regular season game, they defeated the North Country Community College Saints for the second time this season by a score of 110-87.

Leading them to a record of 21 wins and 6 losses.

Before the game started, the crowd filled the bleachers. Family and friends were present to support the players as it was the last home game for the seniors. Caleb Canty, Elliot Amkomah, O’nandi Brooks, Eddie Kwaw, Brandon DeGrasse and Terrell Evans celebrated their last home game and had their pictures taken with their family to say goodbye to Hudson Valley Community College.

The women’s basketball team was attended to raise their spirits and support the team.
Two of them predicted the men’s win.

“They are good,” Christina Wright, a paramedic major, said. “They are going to win.”

“They are definitely going to win,” Joyce Ann Peckham, a criminal justice major, said.

At half time, the Vikings were ahead by a score of 41-45.

Caleb’s mother, India, came to this game confident that the men’s team would win. She claimed to have been at every game or at least watched the live stream online.

“This team is more a second-half team,” she said.

In the end, she was correct as the Vikings scored 65 points in the second half.

Point guard, Caleb Canty, led the way with an amazing score of 43 points. He made 15 of his 26 shots and scored all of his free throws.

O’nandi Brooks, forward, added 24 points on the day and got 18 rebounds over the 42 rebounds from the team. He also had 4 steals like Willy Aybar, guard, who also added 9 assists.

Brandon DeGrasse had 11 points with 8 assists and 7 rebounds.

“This team can go deep into the playoffs and go to nationals,” Aybar said. “They have the potential to win it all if they keep their heads on straight.”

“It is a historic season because [Hudson Valley Community College’s] reputation was not as good as it is and now we are making a name for ourselves,” Aybar continued.

The season is over for the Vikings, but they are not done playing. Playoffs began Feb. 26 and the team is going with the intent of winning regionals and going to nationals.

“We are perfectly capable of winning, but just as much as we are capable of losing,” Aybar stated. “We just need to give everything we have.”
