Women’s basketball heads to playoffs with momentum

Women’s Basketball showed their dominance in a 71-40 win over Delhi, in their last game before the playoffs, on Saturday.

My’Asia Alston lead the team in her last home game with the Vikings, scoring 28 points in the victory, with 7 rebounds and 6 steals.

Sara Mroczkowski finished off the game hitting a bank shot, her first score of the game. “It definitely felt awesome considering it’s the last time I will be able to play on this court. It felt really good being able to have a basket in the [record] books,” she said.

The Vikings dominated the first 6 minutes of the game, with the score reaching 11-2. Eight minutes into the game, Sierra Sangetti-Daniels, guard/forward for the Vikings, hit Hudson Valley’s 2nd three-point shot of the game.

By the 10 minute mark of the first half, the Broncos were trailing the Vikings by the smallest deficit they had all game, but with 6 minutes left, Alston hit back-to-back foul shots to extend the Vikings lead to 10 points, 25-15.

The Vikings faced off against the Broncos one month before, on Jan. 21, a game which ended in a 66-68 Hudson Valley loss.

“Delhi beat us in last second of last game, which is complete bullcrap so we just wanted to show them that they should have never beat us. That was a complete fluke and I think our score reflects that,” said Sangetti-Daniels.

“We came out more intense, ready to play them because we were mad because the first time we should have crushed them but we didn’t. It was the senior game so there was a lot of energy,” said Vikings guard Kylee McPhail.

“It was a really tough loss and they took it hard, so I think your emotions put you in the right mindset that you need to be here, at this point,” said head coach Kathleen Russell.

Alston scored 17 in the first half to help the Vikings build their lead. Sangetti-Daniels was second with 14 points, and Sarah Janson added 13 points and 8 rebounds.

Sangetti-Daniels, averaging 13.7 points per game was also awarded prior to Saturday’s win. The senior from Oneonta earned the Third-Team All-Conference honors. “It’s not what I did to be 13th in the league, It’s what we did to become 13th in the league,” she said.

“We’re definitely going to miss Sierra and Sara in the post and My[‘Asia] would just dribble up and down the court and dominate,” said guard Emily Mitchell about 6 players leaving the team.

“It’s tough shoes to fill but we’ll make it happen and have a lot good players coming in next season as well,” said Russell.

With the last game of the regular season completed, they will contend against North Country this Friday for regionals. Similar to their first matchup against Delhi this season, their last matchup against North Country was a close game, ending in a 65-63 victory. “We’re definitely going to do fine. We’re playing a team we already beat so that’s good,” said Courtney Fennelly, forward/center combo player for the Vikings.
