The Lady Vikings opened their basketball season with three convincing wins in their first four.

They won two games on the road at Dutchess (58-46) and SUNY Orange (64-47), before splitting two games over the weekend. After winning 74-49 over Cayuga on Saturday, the Lady Vikings lost their first of the season to Onondaga on Sunday 72-44.

“Four games in seven days is a lot on the team, but we can’t use being tired as an excuse,” said head coach Kathleen Russell.

The Lady Vikings defense has been strong to start the season, holding each of their first three opponents to under 50 points. This is despite having just 11 players on their roster.

“I’m very proud of the girls, they’ve been working really hard.” said Russell.

The Lady Vikings also made defensive adjustments at halftime during Saturday’s game. After giving up 30 points in the first half they gave up just 19 in the second half.

“Defense is what is going to win us games. We changed up our defense and talked about cutting down on turnovers.” said Russell.

The Lady Vikings did exactly that, giving up the ball just 3 times in the second half. This was in contrast to the 9 they had in the first half.

“They realized they needed to play better in the second half.” said Russell.

Their offense has been led by My’Asia Alston, who is averaging over 25 points per game.
The team will play again on Wednesday at home against Albany Pharmacy.
