The Hudson Valley Community College women’s basketball team got their season started right with beating Rockland Community College Thursday, Nov 1 by an incredible score of 95-13.

The Vikings defense was incredible in the first quarter, limiting Rockland to zero points. They also cleaned the glass well, limiting Rocklands rebounds and putbacks. The Vikings scored 21 in the quarter taking 36 shots as a team. Seven of the 36 shots were from the three-point range.

The entirety of the half was dominated by the Vikings. Their continued stout defense limited Rockland and the offense for Hudson Valley Community College was consistent.

“I think we’re doing a great job on the defensive side of the floor,” individual studies major Nick said. “Limiting a team to zero points in [a] quarter is pretty impressive.”

“It’s awesome to see us come out this strong in the season opener,” he said. “Lots of teams don’t get in their groove until halfway through the season but we look great so far,” he said. “It doesn’t look like we have much rust at all.”

“I’d say we obviously look good so far,” said a relative of a Hudson Valley Community College student. “I’m not sure if it’s because of the lackluster competition or the talent of our team, maybe even a combination of the two but it’s crazy to see a team go scoreless for a whole quarter.”

“I’m just happy our girls are keeping up the intensity while we are winning,” they said. “It shows we are gonna fight to the end no matter what the score is.”

The rest of the game was no different for the Vikings as they closed out the game playing great defense and really controlling the pace and game as a whole.

Sophomore guard Hannah Kreiger (Brunswick/Tamarac) was the leading scorer in the game, getting 19 points. That was more than what the entire Rockland team made the whole game.

She was also flawless from the free throw line going 6-for-6.

Sophomore forward Hayley Jones got in on the scoring (Catskill/Catskill), collecting 16 points on seven made attempts. Including multiple 3-pointers.

Lyndsay Miller (Loudonville/Shaker), Christina Wright (Lansingburgh/Lansingburgh) and Melpomeni Doutsis (Albany/Albany) all scored in double digits as Hudson Valley Community College had an impressive total of five players with more than 10 points.

“What I saw from the team tonight was great,” said Sarah a criminal justice major. “It’s an awesome confidence boost to come out and dominate a game like this,” she said. “Hopefully they will take what they can from this game and continue it in their next one.”

The team looks forward to the support of the great Hudson Valley Community College basketball fans and hopes everyone can catch their next home game on Nov 20 vs Ulster County Community College.
