Chef William Works Wonders at Williams Café

Williams Hall, home to Hudson Valley’s Automotive Technology, Auto Body, and ECM students, has had a cafe since its renovation in 1987. This year on the menu, there are fresh sandwiches, pizzas, hot dogs, calzones, paninis, tea, coffee, and slushies; but that was not always the case.

“Will [the chef] started this fall in the cafeteria and he’s done great things with the place,” said Jim Countryman, Electrical Construction and Maintenance instructor.

William, the chef, baker, and register operator at the Williams Café, said, “Last year they only served prepackaged and premade foods that they brought over from the campus center, but I make everything from scratch, all of the baked goods, the pizza, the calzones, and the paninis. Before I got here, we didn’t even have a panini press.”

With the new equipment in the cafeteria, this semester Hudson Valley may be able to achieve its goal of consistency between the cafeterias.

“We’re trying to do all limited offers in Williams Hall in addition to the main campus, for example, whenever we serve a specialty hamburger at the main campus, such as the “Mile High,” or the “Burnin’ Love Burger,” said Kara Rice, Chartwells Catering Manager.

“I don’t eat there that often but I know a lot of people that would appreciate it if they accepted credit cards,” said ECM senior, Jonathan George. Despite the credit supporting vending machines around the corner, Williams Cafe does not accept credit or debit cards.

“[A card reader] would be a lot safer, [since] with less cash in one place it would be more secure,” said ECM Senior, Zohar Yisrael.

Ann Carrozza, Director of the Faculty Student Association, said, “If Williams Cafe accepted credit cards, the line would get very backed up with only one register open. Students can use their Hudson Valley ID cards to purchase food in Williams Hall or anywhere else on campus, for that matter, free of sales tax,” said Carrozza.

Carrozza said, ”Some credit cards give you cash back, so if you use that card and visit the FSA or http://www.dineoncampus.com/HVCC and add money to your student ID for a food plan, you save twice.”

Williams Cafe is located between Cogan and Williams halls and is open Monday through Friday until 2 p.m. For more information, visit the FSA office.
