HVCC Hosts Future City Competition

The Future City Competition is an event that is sponsored by Hudson Valley each year, open to all middle schools in the region to participate.

The competition this year began in September. There were about 50 schools that began their journeys playing an online game called “Sim City.”

After the online game, the groups representing their schools wrote essays on storm water management that would be read and evaluated.

There were then a total of 20 middle schools that were invited to show their new city models and explain their ideas on how they would help improve the environmental issues that we are faced with today.

“Middle schoolers trying to come up with in-depth, complex solutions for our environmental issues? Whatever happened to Spelling Bees?” said one parent.

“The Future City Competition is something that’s done every year here. It was founded by Hudson Valley Community College, and I think this is a great thing, not only for the future, but also for our great young minds,” said Faculty member Craig D’Allaird.

Each middle school group that competed in the Future City Competition had at least five to six students. Out of the 20 schools represented at the event, five were chosen by the judges.
