Hudson Valley opened the new 100,000 square-foot Science Center on Aug. 26 for the start of the fall 2013 semester.
The $35 million building contains a greenhouse along with 25 laboratories, 18 classrooms, faculty and staff offices, a conference area, and a science study center. It is also housing a new café.
In the current fall 2013 semester, the facility will serve over 7,500 students who will study in the fields of biology, chemistry, physics, biotechnology, biomanufacturing, earth science and forensics.
The Workforce Development Institute and Community and Professional Education offices will also be using the Science Center to offer credit-free training and education.
The college’s new Science Center holds video conference labs and classrooms that will provide education to high schools such as Hoosic Valley, Averill Park and Maple Hill High Schools.
“Hudson Valley has always been a leader in scientific education. [This new facility] allows us to house scientific education under one roof,” said Dennis Kennedy, Executive Director of Communications and Marketing.
“The building is a really lovely building. The transition has been fairly smooth from Fitzgibbons to here,” said Professor Gwendowlyn Knapp. “The classroom has really nice facilities [that are] very highly automated with new technology and SMART Podiums. We had some minor hiccups with the Internet in the beginning but they [were fixed up] during class and it’s a nice classroom.”
“[The] state of the art facility with the latest technologies gives our students new opportunities to study emerging technologies. We’re very excited the facility is open and we are excited that students are really enjoying the space and that is what it is all about,” said Dennis Kennedy.
