Cross Country Team at HVCC

If you are looking to relieve stress, want to meet new friends, and enjoy running, then the Hudson Valley cross country team might be for you. Not only does it provide a way to meet new people, but it can also help you stay in shape.

Coach Chuck Terry said that cross country is “distance running over grass, fields, woods, and soft surfaces.”

The cross country season runs from the end of August to the beginning of November and the team meets every day at the McDonough Sports Complex at 4:30 p.m. for practice.

Every weekend, there are cross country meets, where the women’s team will typically run 3.1 miles and the men’s will run five miles.

“Practice usually consists of hill workouts, speed workouts, and distance runs,” said Paul Cox who runs for the men’s cross country team.

You don’t have to have a lot of running experience to join the team. Morgan DuBois, one of the females on the team, said she has been running on and off for five years.

Students feel that they have benefited from joining the team.

“Cross country at Hudson Valley has opened doors for me to meet professional runners,” said Cox.

Dubois said, “Joining the team has made me more organized, structured, and healthier.”

Running also helps relieve stress during stressful times. DuBois said, “Running makes me feel good about myself and it is good for you.”

Both Cox and DuBois joined cross country to stay in shape and do something social after school. The cross country team is fairly small, consisting of two females and five males.

Coach Terry has been the Hudson Valley cross country coach for three years now. “This will be my fourth year coaching the men’s team, and I have been coaching the men and women’s team together for three seasons,” said Terry.

He said, “It’s a sport that promotes physical fitness, a healthy lifestyle, friendship, and positive relationships.”
