Wide Selection at Troy’s Farmers’ Market

The local Saturday Farmers Market has been going on for 12 years now and is not just present in the summer, like most farmers markets. It offers an array of options year round.

“We usually see close to or over 5000 people and over 60 outside venders that continue to sell throughout the winter,” said the market’s president, Cindy Pohlmann.

She said, “It may get slower nearer to February when the majority of the farms only offer squashes and potatoes, but we do have a select few growers that use greenhouses, so there will also be tomatoes and herbs all year.”

“I come from Albany just to get some of the organic cheeses and vegetables,” said Jasmine LaBounty, Albany resident.

Fresh, grain-fed meat stands and, for those old enough, locally made cooking and drinking wines are available. Vendors also offer apples, gourds, and pumpkins from upstate’s Bowman’s Orchards, and church-sponsored jams.

“We have been coming here since the beginning, and our customer base grows every week, with people looking for homemade jams and breads,” said vendor Tom Rossack.

“Our prices are fair and we have a new selection every week to fit with the ever-changing seasons,” he said.

“The homemade quilts and knitted scarves are my favorite, no matter the time of year. They are nice and warm, perfect for cozying up with a good book or with your sweetheart,” said Martha Keller, Watervliet resident.

“The sweet apple cider from the orchard booths makes a wonderful winter juice for the grandkids,” she said.

“You will find me here every weekend, looking for new, delicious ingredients for my cooking,” said Carrie Fraim, local resident. “Everything is always tasty and there are always such vivid colors and smells. It is my weekly retreat.”
