Everyone  always says that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, but we never hear how to fit in into our day. With hectic schedules, morning traffic, and late nights it’s easy for students to miss out.

There are lots of simple solutions like meal-prepping that could make it part of our routine rather than a hassle we eliminate for the sake of time.

Breakfast consists of coffee and dry cereal Individual studies major, Nadia Kuban. That’s only when she has time to eat it though. Her mornings consist of her rushing out of her house and trying to get to classes on time.

Liberal arts major Haley Bono says that she usually doesn’t have time to eat either.

“I have a 40 minute commute [to school.]  I don’t sleep well and I don’t wake up well, which leaves me little time to eat in the morning,” Bono said.

“I typically don’t eat breakfast, sometimes a protein bar and I don’t get another chance to eat in the day until after two,”said Jake Hayes.

If he does have the time to eat breakfast it’s whatever is most convenient. “I just eat something from the vending machine because when I wake up, I have to come right to school so I don’t have much time,” said Hayes.

Vending machine snacks and protein bars are good but they certainly aren’t good for breakfast.

One way to guarantee a balanced breakfast that’s still convenient enough for busy mornings is to start meal prepping. Meal prepping is when you make breakfast the night before. Many people who regularly prep their meals make a bulk amount over the weekend. This enables them not to have to worry about breakfast at all for a few days.

Smoothies are something else you could prep the night before and blend in the morning.  Many grocery stores sell pre-portioned combinations of frozen fruits and vegetables to make it even easier. They are easy to throw some into a blender during a busy morning. and you have everything you need to start the day in a cup you can drink on the way to your morning classes.

Even the most avid meal preppers will get too busy to prep at some point. Quick breakfasts that don’t take much time and have nutrition benefits a student needs include whole grain bagels and cereals. Yogurt and fresh fruit are also very easy to grab on your way out the door. Eggs do take a little longer to throw together but the high protein will keep you from getting hungry for a while.

Don’t forget that their are always on-campus eating choices too. You can show up a little early and grab a breakfast to take with you to class.

Breakfast is more important than you may think. According to LifeEducation.org breakfast increases concentration, learning ability, and provides energy. Breakfast can also improve mood and reduce the risk of obesity by preventing overeating throughout the day,  according to Australian Red Cross.

Health Services encourages online resources like Student Health 101 in the Health Services section of the Hudson Valley website for credible information on nutrition. This can be valuable for students looking for healthy eating advice.
