Hudson Valley’s Intramural sports program is giving students another chance to relax and socialize.

“There are traditional sports…then we have the game part. Every Thursday we have bean bag toss, racket sports, jump rope. We have done Nintendo Wii in the past. We also oversee some of the hours in the fitness room,” said Ken Dagostino, coordinator of the Intramural sports program.

The Intramural program is held on Monday, Thursday, and Friday. Games and events are held around noon or 2 p.m. The events are open to all students and faculty and staff.

“You can go on the athletic site on the Hudson Valley website [and] check the intramural schedule, which is also in my office. We also have a Facebook page where you can check for any updates about the intramural program,” said Dagostino.

“The events are really cool to play and the time that they have, it works perfectly with my schedule. I get out of class mostly right before the events and it’s a good way to unwind for the rest of the day,” said Nick Carpenter, senior.

“All the events they have are very active and it is a good way to get your daily physical activity and a great way to meet new people,” said Ryan Buckley, senior.

Most of the events are repeated every week and are done on a rotational basis.

“It really helps that they have the schedule all set up for the whole semester so that way I can see when I want to go and play,” said Carpenter.

There are also days when they play basketball and other regular sports.

“The days where we play basketball are very fun. I enjoy playing basketball every week and I’m able to play with my friends,” said Adrian Valentino, senior.

Along with the regular daily sports and games, the intramural program oversees any outside events such as the kickball game, the softball game, and any other events that are scheduled on special dates.

“Every year they have a March Madness tournament where you fill out a bracket and…compete against other students’ brackets for prizes. Those are really fun,” said Buckley.

“My favorite events are the free throw shooting contest, the home run derby, and the racquetball tournament,” said Valentino.

The intramural program is a way for the students and faculty to socialize and a chance for them interact with new students and make new friends.

“It’s good to interact with each other and try to give them a break from school and studying. Like on Thursdays, in between classes, they can come by and try and throw something into a hole and win a prize with the other students,” said Dagostino.

“This program is a different way to meet new people. It also helps me because I play on the basketball team, and it definitely helps me stay in shape and get to know my team members better,” said freshman Jose Reyes.
