Letter from the Editor

Dear Readers,

The first time I met Alex Duerr, the student president, I was conducting an interview that would be turned into a news story about how he came to HVCC, then became the student senate president.

He had quite a few qualities that anyone might look for in a leader. He was charismatic, polite, and spoke for himself.

Looking back at those days, just before school went into session, I still wonder if his expectations for his job would be reality.

Duerr’s job includes dealing with the full array of student clubs and activities on campus, so you can imagine how the job could become stressful.

Fast forward a few weeks into the school year. From my perspective as editor of this publication, a dramatic story needed to be broken, which largely involved Duerr’s help.

Just as this stressful news piece went front page onto our shelves, Alex handled the pressure like a champ. What could have been a disaster, he turned into a clean cut, lesson-learned moment for everyone he worked with.

I have admired that.

Now, we are a few weeks out from the end of the semester. While many students are sweating over the impending doom associated with final projects, I am reflecting on a year of lessons, stress, and expended time and energy.

This, I know, that the student leadership will not be the same next year. I will not be the editor of the Hudsonian and Alex will not be the Student President.

And whether you do or do not believe it, whether you see it or you don’t, the students who lead this school, such as Student Trustee Adam Sanzone and Student Senate President Alex Duerr, have a heavy influence on student life.

While I will not dispel my view as to who should be the next president, I will leave you, dear reader, with this encouragement: please vote.

Find out what you would you would like to see in next year’s student life and vote for the candidate who embodies that.

Finally, I thank the Student Senate. At the Hudsonian, we work with their office pretty closely, so it’s wonderful to know that the people there have the best interests of student activities in mind.

Thank you, and as always…

Go Vikings!
