We’ve all heard of Netflix. We all use it way more than we should. So, what do your fellow students recommend?

Adison Johnson, a theater arts major, suggests a semi-recent thriller movie. “I just watched ‘Would You Rather,’ it was really corny but it was really good.” Some students like the idea of coming home after a long day and being able to watch something without too much thinking.

For those who enjoy the classics, Nadia Kuban has the pick for you. “’The Breakfast Club’ just went on Netflix and it’s still really good,” the individual studies major said. If you’ve never had the chance to see it, catch it while it’s still available!

A common recommendation from students was “American Horror Story” which has gained popularity over the past few years for its obscure characters and reference to reoccurring themes in modern society like murder and politics. People love a show that stands out from the crowd. “American Horror Story” offers exactly that, and continues improving with every season, giving us new, fresh and creepy storylines that keeps the audience returning for more.

“I recommend ‘Alex Strangelove’,” said Ryan Livingston, majoring in environmental studies. The movie, released in April, is a comedy about the complexities that teenagers face as they grow up and find their identity. It’s a kind-hearted movie for light-hearted viewers.

The algorithm used by Netflix suggests shows and movies for you to watch based on what you’ve already shown interest in.  While this will give you some ideas that you’re going to like, you may miss out on shows or movies that could potentially be your favorite because they happen to be in a different genre or not synced in the algorithm. That’s why we recommend what we watch to a friend or look at reviews and see what shows are trending on social media.

Netflix has become a widely used entertainment source that some say has replaced traditional television. Many people have made the switch from cable service providers to the simpler, cheaper source: Netflix. Not only has Netflix become economically efficient for the customer, but also for the creators of many original series. Countless titles such as “The Sinner”, “Black Mirror” and “Ozark” have been produced within the last few years and have become incredibly popular.

Netflix as a studio is extremely open to giving producers creative freedom. This leads to some amazing Netflix Originals. Some that were recommended by students include: “F is for Family,” “Disenchantment,” and “Queer Eye.” “I finished watching ‘Queer Eye,’ and not gonna lie, I thought I was gonna hate it, but I ended up crying at every episode. It was so good,” said Kuban.

Netflix has also brought back long-running shows that have been wrongfully cancelled like “Arrested Development” and “Gilmore Girls” and adapted them into new seasons where the audience can enjoy their old favorite shows all over again.

All in all, whether you prefer shows or movies, classics or modern hits, Netflix has some hidden gems that are worth watching.
