Student Senate President welcomes students

Welcome to Fall 2018! My name is Jamison Jarosz, your Student Senate President. I would like to extend a sincere salutation to all students and faculty. To the incoming Freshmen class, I would like to personally thank you for choosing Hudson Valley Community College to begin your higher education journey! Hands-down, you made the right choice!

As we move forward as individuals, I know that we are united in this … the pursuit of academic success and personal growth. Whether you are new to HVCC, a returning student, or a professor here for many years, I know that keeping a fresh and positive perspective will help you to achieve your personal goals. When that happens we all win.

My colleagues [Vice President Ali Cheema, Treasurer Brendan Caluneo, Secretary Maeve Uhalde] and I took office on June 1, 2018, and we did not hesitate to get right to work. Since that first day, we have had a number of key meetings and are continuing to pursue our campaign initiatives. Over the summer, I was able to meet with the 64 SUNY Campus Student Government Presidents. In addition, I have also met with our new HVCC College President, Dr. Ramsammy. His genuine interest in the success of HVCC and its students left me feeling confident that working together this year, on your behalf, will yield an excellent result.

As a Student Senate Team, we’re already making strides towards a great year. Working hand-in-hand with a Gold-Star Mother to bring much needed attention to today’s veterans has been an honor, and our 1st Annual HVCC Veteran Celebration Day is set for this February. Expressing thanks for our fellow HVCC students, who have or are currently serving in the armed forces, is important. Their service maintains our freedom. Also, as a Senate, we have made our HVCC discounted movie tickets available to the HVCC TEC-SMART Campus. We are also working closely with the SUNY Student Assembly Executives in order for HVCC to host the upcoming January 2019 SUNY SA Executive Meeting.

I also want to encourage you to get involved on campus! Building a strong professional network is one of the most important things that you can carry into your future. Joining Student Senate is one of the best ways to start or continue doing just that. It allows you to build connections among both peers and professionals. Along with this, you will have the ability to earn a small stipend each semester and travel. Most importantly, you will be able to create the change you wish to see on campus. You can make a difference! Come join us for our bi-weekly Student Senate Meetings which are held in the Siek Campus Center’s Student Leadership Room.

If you have any questions or concerns, never hesitate to swing by my office which is located in the upstairs of the Siek Campus Center, Room 210. You can also reach me by phone at (518)-629-4820 or via email at j-jarosz1@hvcc.edu. I look forward to connecting with you all!

“Leave your comfort zone… that is when you grow.”
