What’s the worst thing you’ve ever done? Well, if you haven’t seen this movie, then it may count as one. “Together Together” is by far one of the best young adult pieces to be produced since the early 2000s when Paper Town and pieces like that paved the road for any teenager.

Matt (Ed Helms) is a middle-aged, lonely male who decides that he wants to have a child. With the help of a surrogate name Anna (Patti Harrison), his dream starts to unfold. This epic film was released on April 23rd, 2021, and directed by Nikole Beckwith. During the nine months of Anna being pregnant, many topics unfolded with a great eye for detail.

For example, both characters throughout most of the film can’t stand each other. Not accepting the fact that being friends means you must be okay with that person’s flaws. For some odd reason, they keep trying to label their relationship but end up learning that it can be whatever it wants to be no matter what anyone thinks of it.

As a young adult myself, I feel this topic hits home. Growing up, people always told me that if I talked to a boy, he had to go out with me. Now that I’m older, I know this is wrong. “Together Together” does a great job explaining this through scripted scenes, putting the topic in a visual format for the audience to learn from.

A personal liking of mine is the lack of music in the background. In multiple scenes, when the main actors are talking, there is nothing but silence between their spoken lines. It fits perfectly with the idea that what they’re doing is weird-so with the lack of music, the conversation gets amazingly odd. I don’t know why I like it so much but something about it feels so natural compared to some films where it’s just because of very bad acting.

A key reason this movie was a win was that the connection between the character’s needs interlocks perfectly. During the film we learn that Anna wants to go to college, that’s the only reason why she’s having a baby. While she’s pregnant, Matt does many things to support her including making tea, buying her shoes and letting her stay at his place during the final weeks before birth. Anna keeps pushing him away due to having an icky past from a broken relationship but one night she finally breaks and tells Matt she loves him.

That moment broke me since it was the first time, I learned that you could love someone non-romantically. Anna loves Matt, not in a boyfriend way but because he cares about her. She never had someone like that in her life, so what he does makes her feel loved-so she loves him back.

With this film containing realistic topics while adding humor and a dash of stunning scenes, you will end up falling for a film that takes the title of best 2021 young adult piece.
