With a current total of 17 wins and five losses, the Vikings Men’s Basketball team were the definition of warriors during Saturday’s afternoon game with a 74-67 win over bitter rival SCCC.

Trailing by only four points in the final minutes of the second period, supporters from Schenectady were vocal in their support and elated at the victory within sight. Chanting defense might not have been the best advice, as Caleb Canty, Guard, and the Vikings assuredly mounted their offense.

Once the game is tied, the Royals were on full tilt, jumping high, early and wide at shots that don’t exist.

With their fans in the seats stone silent, Schenectady gives up two easy threes to the Vikings Brandon DeGrasse, Guard, as the energy transfers in the bleachers.

Onlookers from Hudson Valley were honest about their feelings regarding the game, cheering for their friends, sympathetic they would have to face the Vikings.

The scene on the court deteriorated with super bowl hail mary passes after check, which required the referee to run over the rules once again, and a triple team press which ended in a bear hug.

At one point Schenectady’s Corey Sanders, Guard, catches his rebound off a failed layup attempt, only to pass it out of the paint and into the hands of the green and white. A JR Smith level play in the last two minutes of the game that only contributed to their defeat in crunch time.

For HVCC Caleb Canty had a game-high 21 points shooting 5-17 from the field and getting to the free throw line an impressive 12 times. O’nandi Brooks had an impressive game coming two blocks short of a triple-double. Brooks had 13 points,16 rebounds, and 8 blocks. He had the game-high in both blocks and rebounds.

As the Vikings march on, their 18-5 season continues to look as stellar as it started. HVCC looks to stay in the win column this week against the Clinton Community College Cougars.
