Women’s basketball: Comeback swept up by Broome

Women’s basketball hosted the Broome Hornets Saturday and fell short in completing a comeback for the ages. #21 My’Asia Alston, from Cohoes, led all scorers with a career high 33 points, eight rebounds, seven steals and four assists. #23 Sierra Sangetti-Daniels, from Oneonta, added 18 points but it wasn’t enough to get stung by the Hornets.

#33 Sarah Janson got into foul trouble early, receiving two fouls by 3:35 into the game. She had scored six points up until that point and the Viking offense looked to be in control.  Head coach Kathleen Russell had to tweak the game plan and the team didn’t really look the same after that occurred.

“She was is a rhythm early on and two quick fouls disrupts a lot of things,” said coach Russell. The Vikings had a tough time adjusting and found themselves down 17 points with 12:30 left in the game.

The Vikings fall to 11-7, but in a game that can be looked at as having a lot of negatives there is a big positive that the Vikings can hang their heads on. Behind the play of sophomore guard My’Asia Alston the Vikings closed the gap to a two point game, but thats as close as it would get as the Hornets downed the Vikings 82-73.

“My’Asia is a big part of what we are trying to do,” said coach Russell. “She really opens things up for everyone else.”

“It feels good to get my team going and motivate them when we’re down,” said Alston. Her role looks to increase every game as the Vikings are looking to get back to rare form.

The next game for the women’s basketball team is Wednesday night at 5 p.m. at home as they host the Adirondack Community College Timber Wolves.
