The Women’s Basketball team played their first exhibition game in a scrimmage that hopefully signifies the coming season.

Hudson Valley played Bryant and Stratton on Sunday, Oct. 20 in a practice game that concluded with a 77-68 victory for the Vikings.

Early in the match they were losing on average by up to 15 points.

“We were down, and they believed in it.” Women’s Basketball Head Coach Robert Coleman said.

It seemed at the early stages of the game that a Viking defeat was inevitable, but it all changed during the fourth period.

“We have resilience,” Coleman said. “I kept telling them, ‘don’t worry, we will be fine,’ and we were fine,” he continued. “It was hard at first, but they decided to listen.”

The crowd started to cheer as the Vikings quickly caught up making the score 68-68 in the last two and a half minutes of the game.

Hudson Valley did not allow Bryant & Stratton College to score any points in those last minutes, ending the game 77-68.

“I think we felt a little more as a team at the end than we did at the beginning,” said Grace VanRoy, nursing major. “We started out slow, we could’ve been more aggressive, and in the end we really picked it up.”

Towards the end of the game, the Vikings realized that they needed to work together.

“I think in the fourth quarter we knew that we wanted to win the game,” Emily Erickson, adolescent education major said. “This is our first scrimmage, and communication is something practiced.”

Their win might not have counted as the official game, but the scrimmage was a learning experience.

Coach Coleman believes that they will have a good season, and they have recorded the game to take a closer look at their mistakes.

“[This game] gives us a chance to get the dust off because we’ve only been playing in practice against each other, so now we have opponents and a film we can go back and watch to get better.” Coleman stated.

As the basketball season is nearing, the Women’s Basketball team is something we need to keep an eye out for. If this game is any indication of the coming season, these Vikings fight for their victories.
