Are you looking for a way you can get employed right out of college? You might want to get an internship.

“Internships give students a hands on and personal experience in a field that [they] are pursuing a career in,” Gayle Healy, the Director at the Center for Careers and Transfer, said.

According to Healy, there is no better way to learn than to actively apply what students have learned in class to the real world they will be stepping into after they finish college.

Many students are reluctant to try to get internships, but Healy says students who get internships tend to get better job offers after graduating. This also assumes that a student does well in their internship.

“They’re going to have a better chance at getting a job within the company that they’ve interned with, rather than somebody that the company doesn’t know at all,”  Healy said.

Internships also give students the opportunity to network. of networking. In professional environments you never know who know who is attached to what network.

“I think they’re a valuable experience, I would say even if you’re program doesn’t require an internship, or even offer an internship, it’s worth looking into [finding your own,]” Healy said.

The Center for Careers and Transfer can help students find internships if they don’t know where to start. Just because the Center for Careers and Transfer can help doesn’t mean a student can’t find a company that they have an interest for working for and arrange their own internship.

Healy said that when she was in college for phycology her internship was one of the best experiences of her life. “It was an amazing experience to put everything that I had been leaning in my program to gain the experience doing it. Doing it for real was absolutely one of the best experiences in my life,” said Healy.

“Internships are a great way to really experience what you’ve been studying and to put what [students] have learned about into practice, while building your resume,” Healy said.
